Nokia has acquired Plazes, which develops Web platforms for location sharing and publishing, making it the second geo-based company bought by Nokia. The deal allows Nokia to extend its context-based service offering with social presence and time-based activity planning features. Plazes adds the elements of place and time to social networking through features that allow people to alert friends and associates to their activities and locations. Users can also review their own and others’ past activities and share their experiences and make plans with friends, who can respond with comments and suggestions as well as their own location information. As per its announcements in November, Microsoft has kicked-off a series of changes in its Windows Live suite of software and services, with the addition of a bunch of social networking features. Keeping up its November declaration, Microsoft has added a cluster of social networking features - like e-mailing, instant messaging, image-storage and sharing, online collaboration, and calendaring - to its Windows Live service. The new Windows Live homepage has received a refreshing new look, laying special emphasis on profile, group, and photo-pages.

Social NetworkA new survey conducted by Harris Interactive for IT security firm Cloudmark has raised serious questions about the security of social networks such as Bebo and Facebook. The survey found that over the past year more than four-fifths of social networking site users said they received unwanted or spam friend invitations, messages or postings on their social or professional network account. Jamie de Guerre, chief technical officer of Cloudmark said
“Social networking sites need to be concerned about the proliferation of spam and phishing attacks and the impact it could have on their ability to grow and retain members. Social networking providers must address the security issue head-on or risk declining usage and revenues.”
